Turn of the Century Lamppost: RESCUED TO SHINE AGAIN Shep Oliver, the Robeson County History Museum’s Grounds and Facilities Chair, puts the finishing touches on installation of the turn of the century lamppost that will soon shed lovely new light in the Museum’s garden. Acquired through a private donation, the lamppost dates from the early 1900’s and, according to preliminary research, was manufactured right here in Lumberton by, as identified by an imprint on the base, the Hupmobile Company. While no further records are available, it is known that this is one of only two surviving examples of Lumberton’s early municipal street lights. Others met a watering end, having been dumped in the Lumber River. The additional survivor has the good fortune to grace the garden of a local private home.
