October 2015 President's Report

PRESIDENT’S REPORT FOR OCTOBER, 2015

ROBESON COUNTY HISTORY MUSEUM

  1. Hosted Cycle NC at museum on October 1st.  Though the journey had to end here in Lumberton due to five days of rain, we enjoyed a respectable turn out at the museum----75 visitors.  I am so grateful to the following docents who helped to assist during that day: Faye Middleton, Docent Chair; Ann Chaney, Nell Lyon, Wanda Aguirre, Vanessa Abernathy, Wendy Pridgen, Brenda Pope, Cindy Blanks, Anne Monroe, Ruth Ann McLellan, Hilda McNeill, Jim Ebert, Eleanor Ebert, Dencie Lambdin, Colleen Brown, Courtney Miles, and Greg Price.  Thanks team!

  2. Worked with Melissa Hardy and Colleen Brown on the Christmas Home Tour ticket/booklet.  These two ladies put in a great deal of time and the result is going to be a beautiful booklet.  Thanks to Jackie Utz for helping us to proof the booklet.  I think all of us have read it at least 100 times!  If you see an error, don’t tell us!

  3. Designed and picked up posters for the museum sponsorship of artist Melvin Morris in the RCC production of the Civil War.

  4. Presented a program on the museum Christmas Home Tour for Chestnut Street United Methodist Church.

  5. Served docent duty seven times.

  6. Met with electrician twice for the installation of two wall outlets for two of the front windows.  Job completed.

  7. Presided at Executive Council meeting on October 13th.

  8. Met with Public Schools of Robeson County Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, and the Social Studies Supervisor.  The purpose of the meeting was to draw the children into our museum via field trips.  One school has visited this month.  We hope for more.

  9. Met with our treasurer on financial matters.

  10. Worked on a $10,000 grant for the museum from the CSX Railway.  If awarded, we will use these monies toward our garden project at the museum.

  11. Completed a Lumberton City grant which will pay one half of the cost of placing letters above the new awnings with our museum name.  We are using 18 inch letters in a silver color which will complement the gray paint and the trim on the new awnings.  We hope to have the signage in place in time for the Christmas Home Tour.  This new look to the museum will be fantastic!  If you see Connie Russ, please thank her for advising me on how to process the grant.

  12. Met with Sign City three times to process our new signage and to decide on size and color.  Thanks to Faye Middleton and Ruth Ann McLellan for assisting in color and size selection.

  13. Picked up two small Christmas trees at Big Lots to use for the Christmas Home Tour each year at the museum.

  14. Hosted the 4-H Club at the museum for a tour.  Thanks to Faye Middleton for assisting me.

  15. Took down bicycle exhibit in preparation for the holiday season exhibits.  A special thanks goes to Shep Oliver for loading the truck and transporting most of the bicycles back to Myrna Ivey in Fairmont.  I also wish to thank Faye Middleton and Anne Monroe for helping with this task.  The bicycle exhibit was a great success and many visitors enjoyed it.

  16. Met with electrician regarding the purchase of a dehumidifier to control mold and mildew.  Estimated cost is around $1,300 per unit.  He suggested that we place one downstairs near the stairs in hopes that it would control both the basement and the upper floor.  Honeywell is a suggested brand.  A board member has offered to contribute toward the cost.  More discussion at our November 17th full board meeting.
